Illegal car races – thrills with consequences

Illegal car races have been considered a criminal offense and no longer a regulatory violation. We explain what counts as illegal car racing and what the penalties are.

Illegal car races can take several forms:

• Unauthorized driving against each other over a long distance
• Drag race from traffic light to traffic light
• Race alone against the clock

Anyone convicted of an illegal car race will usually have their driving license withdrawn. Besides, the crime vehicle can also be confiscated.

A prison sentence of up to two years or a fine is threatened if someone

• organizes or conducts an illegal car race,
• participates in it or
• Driving at an inappropriate speed, grossly contrary to traffic and recklessly, to achieve the highest possible speed.

Anyone who endangers other people or objects of significant value in the process must expect a prison sentence of up to three years or a fine in the event of a negligent inspection. If the person acts deliberately, there is a risk of imprisonment of up to five years or a fine.

If people are killed or seriously injured, the prison sentence is up to ten years.

In action against illegal car races

Time and again, uninvolved passers-by or car drivers die because people engage in illegal car races. An example: In Sydney, the city ring is being misused as a race track. Now the police are taking action: they want to end this madness with increased controls.

The cars roar loudly when the drivers accelerate, and residents have complained again and again. “When the weather is good, there are complaints of excessive noise, especially in the evening and at night , when vehicles drive around town at full throttle,” says Police Commissioner.

During the last speed check, the investigation team got three youngsters into the net. A 21-year-old and a 24-year-old even admitted to racing. That had consequences: they had to surrender their driving license immediately, the fines authorities imposed a one-month driving ban, a 800 dollar fine and two points.

Apparently, the bad weather keeps the speeders from accelerating. Or the police operation is blown. “We know that the speeders do reconnaissance laps before the illegal races to check whether emergency services are on the way,” says Police Commissioner.

The action ends at around one o’clock on the two-lane one-way street. “The controls and the fines get around. In the social networks some voices get quieter,” says Police Commissioner. His radio croaks one last time, and his colleagues announce their return to the station.
